Topic: Posture

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper seated body alignment and proper standing body alignment.

Materials

  • Seated body alignment: desk or chair, feet flat on the floor, legs parallel, back straight, hands in lap and relaxed
  • Standing body alignment: feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing forward, shoulders back and relaxed, head level, eyes straight ahead
  • Assessment: observation and feedback

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch their bodies by doing some gentle yoga poses.
  • Ask students to think about how their body feels when they are sitting or standing in different ways.
  • Have a few students share their thoughts with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the correct seated body alignment by placing a small ball or beanbag in the center of their back.
  • Explain that the ball or beanbag should be centered between their shoulder blades and should not be higher than the top of their head.
  • Demonstrate proper standing body alignment by placing a small ball or beanbag in the center of the student's back.

  • Have students repeat the proper seated and standing body alignments after you.

Guided Practice

  • Have students sit on the floor with their legs extended in front of them and their backs against a wall.

  • Move the ball or beanbag to the left and right of center and have students demonstrate how their posture changes.
  • Encourage students to maintain proper seated body alignment even when the ball or beanbag is moved away from the center of their back.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to create a short skit or presentation about the importance of proper seated body alignment.
  • Encourage students to include demonstrations of proper seated body alignment in their skits or presentations.

Closure

  • Review the importance of proper seated body alignment for proper musculoskeletal function and to reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about proper seated body alignment today.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice and independent practice to see if they are able to correctly position their bodies.
  • Collect and review the students' posters to assess their understanding of proper seated body alignment.
