Materials

• Posters or charts with images of common units of length (inches, feet, yards, miles, centimeters, meters, kilometers)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of any units of length before. Ask them to name a few and write their responses on the board.
• Explain that today we will be learning about the different units of length and their corresponding prefixes.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students the meter stick and explain that it is used to measure distances in meters.
• Explain that the prefix "meter" comes from the word "metre," which is the unit of length used in the metric system.
• Show the students the inches ruler and explain that it is used to measure distances in inches.
• Explain that the prefix "inch" comes from the word "inch," which is the unit of length used in the imperial system.
• Show the students the centimeter ruler and explain that it is used to measure distances in centimeters.
• Explain that the prefix "centi" comes from the word "centimeter," which is the unit of length used in the metric system.
• Show the students the millimeter ruler and explain that it is used to measure distances in millimeters.
