Topic: division and substraction

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the process of division and substraction and be able to apply them to solve real-world problems.

Materials

• Pencils and paper for each student
• Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

• Review the concept of place value and the concept of adding and subtracting integers.
• Ask the students to solve a simple problem, such as 180 - 60, using the place value table and the add-subtract method.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of division as the process of dividing a number by another number to find the quotient.
• Demonstrate how to divide using the division algorithm (repeated subtraction of the divisor until it is smaller than the dividend, and then finding the remainder).
• Explain the importance of using the divisor and the dividend with the same place value to ensure accuracy.

Guided Practice

• Give the students a few examples of division problems, using the division algorithm to solve them.
• Have the students work in pairs to solve additional division problems, giving guidance and helping students as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work on a set of division problems, either written out or using coins or other materials.
• Encourage the students to use the division algorithm to solve the problems, and to check their answers.

Closure

• Review the steps of the division algorithm and the concept of integer division.
• Ask the students to share any challenges or successes they had with solving division problems.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice to see if they are using the division algorithm correctly and solving the problems correctly.
• Collect and review the students' drawings of their solutions to assess their understanding of the concept of integer division.
