Polygons Lesson Plan for 3rd Grade Students

Topic: Polygons

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to describe and name the different types of polygons and identify their characteristics.

Materials

• Whiteboard or chalkboard
• Drawing paper and pencils for each student
• Examples of different polygons (e.g. triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of polygons before.
• Ask them to share any ideas they might have about polygons.
• Write their ideas on the board or chalkboard.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that a polygon is a shape with straight sides and angles.
• Show the students some examples of different types of polygons, such as triangles, squares, and hexagons.
• Ask the students to identify the number of sides and angles for each polygon.
• Discuss the characteristics of each polygon, including the number of sides and angles, and any properties or characteristics unique to each type of polygon.

Guided Practice

• Show the students more examples of polygons and have them work in pairs to identify the number of sides and angles for each polygon.
• Have the students share their answers with the class and discuss any differences or similarities in their answers.
• Introduce the concept of polygon trivia and have the students work in pairs to quiz each other on the characteristics of different types of polygons.
• Have the students share their trivia knowledge with the class and discuss any misconceptions or additional knowledge they gained from the trivia game.

Practice Test

• Have the students work in pairs to complete a practice test on polygons, including identifying the number of sides and angles for each polygon and answering questions about the characteristics of different types of polygons.
• Have the students share their answers with the class and discuss any incorrect answers or mistakes they made on the test.
• Review any missed concepts and procedures, and wrap up the lesson with a class discussion on the importance of paying attention to detail and learning a subject thoroughly before moving on to the next one.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in pairs to create their own interactive polygon scavenger hunt.
• Have the students choose at least 5 polygons to include in their scavenger hunt and identify the number of sides and angles for each one.
• Have the students design a poster or handout to include the instructions for their scavenger hunt and the answers to the questions.
• Have the students present their scavenger hunts to the class and check for accuracy and comprehension.

Closure

• Review the names and definitions of the different types of polygons.
• Ask the students to share something they learned about polygons during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice to see if they can create accurate polygons.
• Collect and review the students' posters or photos to assess their understanding of the different types of polygons.
