Objectives & Outcomes

Warm-up

• Ask students to find the value of each digit in the following decimal number: 0.456. Have them write their answers on the board.
• Then, ask students to place a value on each digit in the following decimal number: 4.6. Have them write their answers on the board.
• Ask students to explain their reasoning for placing a value on each digit.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that decimals are a way of writing fractions using digits after the decimal point.
• Introduce the concept of place value, and explain that the value of a digit in a decimal number depends on its position. For example, the first digit after the decimal point has a value of one hundredth, the second digit after the decimal point has a value of one tenth, and so on.
• Show students some examples of decimals and fractions, and have them identify the place value of each digit.
• Introduce the multiplication and division of decimals, and explain the rules for multiplying and dividing decimals.
