Percentages Lesson Plan for 4th Grade Students

Topic: Percentages

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to calculate percentages and understand their significance.

Materials

  • Calculators
  • Worksheets with problems for students to solve
  • Transparency with examples of percentge calculations

Warm-up

  • Ask students to give examples of numbers that are greater than 100, such as 200, 300, and 400.
  • Ask students if they know what it means to take a part of a number. For example, if a number is 200 and we take away 20, what is left?
  • Ask students if they can give an example of a number that is less than 100, such as 75, 50, and 25.
  • Ask students if they can give an example of a number that is equal to 100, such as 100, 200, and 300.
  • Ask students if they can give an example of a number that is greater than 100 and less than a hundred, such as 105, 110, and 125.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that there is a special way to write a number as a percentage of another number.
  • For example, if a number is 200 and we want to write it as a percentage of 100, we can write it as 200% or 200/100.
  • If a number is 100 and we want to write it as a percentage of another number, we can write it as 100% or 100/x, where x is the other number.
  • Write some numbers on the board as percentages of 100 and have students confirm that the format is correct.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a set of problems involving percentages of 100, such as "what is 200% of 100?" or "what is 75% of 300?".
  • Have students work in pairs to solve the problems and confirm the answers.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a set of problems involving percentages of a different value, such as "what is 30% of 300?" or "what is 200% of 100?".
  • Have students work independently to solve the problems and confirm the answers.

Closure

  • Review the concept of percentages and how to calculate them.
  • Ask students to share any questions or concerns they have about the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to accurately calculate percentages.
  • Collect and review the calculators used by students during the independent practice activity to assess understanding of the concept.
