Topic: Multiplication strategies

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to apply a variety of multiplication strategies to solve multiplication problems.

Materials

• Arrays of cards with multiplication problems for independent practice
• Whiteboard and markers for teacher demonstration
• Handouts with examples of the different multiplication strategies (optional)

Warm-up

• Review the different ways of representing multiplication, including the standard algorithm, array model, and factor tree.
• Ask students to share some examples of multiplication they already know how to solve.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of multiple-strategy use, explaining that there are multiple ways to solve a multiplication problem.
• Use the whiteboard to demonstrate each of the three multiplication strategies (standard algorithm, array model, factor tree).
• Explain the advantages and limitations of each strategy, and give examples of when to use each one.
• Review the standard algorithm and give some examples of how to use it to multiply larger numbers.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to practice using each of the three multiplication strategies to solve problems.
• Provide moderate support and guidance as needed, encouraging the use of appropriate strategies and checking for accuracy.

Independent Practice

• Have students select one of the three multiplication strategies to use to solve a series of problems.
• Provide support and guidance as needed, encouraging the use of the selected strategy and checking for accuracy.

Closure

• Have students share their favorite strategy and why they like it.
• Review the three strategies and their advantages and disadvantages.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to ensure they are using the appropriate strategy.
• Collect and review their multiplication worksheets to assess their understanding of multiplying by 10.
