4th Grade Identify The Number Of Objects In A Group Lesson Plan Example (Math)

Topic:Identify the number of objects in a group

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the number of objects in a group and understand that the number of objects in a group can be counted.

Materials

  • A variety of different sized and shaped objects (e.g. blocks, pencils, paperclips, stickers, buttons, coins, etc.)
  • Pencils and paper for students to write their findings
  • Calculator (optional)

Warm-Up

  • Have students sit in a circle.
  • Pass out a few objects to each student and have them put the objects in front of them on the floor.
  • Ask the students to count the number of objects they have and write the number on a piece of paper.
  • Repeat this process with a few more objects and have the students count and write down the number of objects each time.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of counting objects in a group.
  • Show the students the objects that they already counted and have them re-count the number of objects to make sure they are the same amount.
  • Explain that when counting objects, it is important to make sure that we are counting the same number of objects in the group.
  • Demonstrate how to count objects in a group by starting with the smallest number and going up to the largest number.
  • For example, when counting coins, we would start with one coin and count up to the total number of coins in the group.
  • Have the students practice counting objects in a group, starting with the smallest number and going up to the largest number.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with the set of objects to count.
  • Have the students work together to count the objects in the group, starting with the smallest number and going up to the largest number.
  • Have the students demonstrate their counting skills to the teacher or aide, who can provide feedback and support as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each student with a worksheet containing several sets of objects to count.
  • Have the students work independently to count the objects in each group, starting with the smallest number and going up to the largest number.
  • Have the students write the numbers they find on their worksheets and show their work to the teacher for assessment.

Closure

  • Review the concept of counting and the relationship between numbers and the quantity of objects.
  • Ask the students to share any challenges they encountered during the activity and how they were able to overcome them.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to see if they are able to accurately count the number of objects in each group and record the correct number in their journals.
  • Evaluate the students' ability to explain their reasoning for choosing the number they did and their ability to explain how they were able to count the objects in their groups.
