Materials

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of fractional numbers before and what they know about them.
• Write down their responses on the whiteboard and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Show examples of fractional numbers using manipulatives or using software such as MathStudio.
• Explain how to add and subtract fractional numbers using the inverse operations.
• Demonstrate how to multiply and divide fractional numbers using the multiplication and division formulas.

• Have students work in pairs to complete a set of fractional number problems using the inverse operations or the multiplication and division formulas.
• Go over the answers as a class and discuss the process used to solve the problems.
