4th Grade Decimal Lesson Plan Example (Math)

Topic: decimal number

Objectives & Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify, represent, and use decimal numbers in various forms.

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Decimal number chart (available online)

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of fractions with the students. Ask them to give examples of fractions they have seen in real life, such as 1/2 (half), 1/3 (one third), etc.
  • Introduce the concept of decimal number and explain that it is a way to write fractions in a simpler form.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students several examples of fractions written in decimal form, such as 1/2 =0.5, 1/3 =0.33, etc.
  • Explain that the decimal point separates the whole number part (on the left) from the fractional part (on the right).
  • Show the students how to write fractions as decimals by placing a decimal point in the appropriate place and dividing the number by the divisor (e.g. 1/2 = 0.5, 1/3 = 0.33, etc.).
  • Explain that the tenths place is the digit to the right of the decimal point, the hundredths place is the digit to the right of the tenths place, and so on.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs or small groups to practice converting fractions to decimals using the manipulatives or worksheets provided. Encourage them to pay close attention to the placement of the decimal point and the division by the divisor.
  • Provide individualized feedback and assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work on a project-based assignment in which they must convert a fraction to a decimal using mental math. They should use the manipulatives or worksheets provided to assist them, if needed.
  • Encourage the students to check their work for accuracy and to show their work in a clear and -organized manner.

Closure

  • Review the concept of decimal numbers and the difference between tenths, hundredths, and -thousandths.
  • Ask the students to share their completed projects and discuss any challenges they faced and -how they were able to solve them.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice and independent practice activities to assess their -understanding of decimal numbers.
  • Collect and review the students' completed worksheets to assess their ability to convert between -decimal numbers and their corresponding fraction and percent forms.
  • Evaluate the students' ability to complete the independent practice activity using working -proportions.
