Topic: Add & Subtract three-digit numbers with and without regrouping

Objectives & Outcomes:

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to add and subtract three-digit numbers with and without regrouping.

Materials

• Large numbers written on the board
• Calculators
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Review place value and the concept of regrouping. Ask students to explain what regrouping means and give an example of when they would use it.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of adding and subtracting three-digit numbers.
• Show students how to add and subtract three-digit numbers using the traditional method. Use manipulatives and provide examples to illustrate the steps.
• Demonstrate how to use the hundred-block to regroup when adding or subtracting.
• Review the properties of addition and subtraction, such as the zero-sum property and the associative property.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a set of addition and subtraction problems using the traditional method.
• Provide assistance as needed and encourage students to use the hundred-block to regroup when necessary.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a set of addition and subtraction problems using the place value-based method.
• Encourage students to use their ten-digit number cards to help them perform the operations and check their answer using the hundred-block.
