Topic: Adding and Subtracting Decimal Numbers

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to add and subtract decimal numbers with three decimal places.

Materials

• Handout with examples of adding and subtracting decimal numbers
• Calculators
• Pencils and paper

Warm-up

• Review the concept of decimal numbers and how to read them.
• Ask students to give examples of decimal numbers they already know, such as 0.25, 0.75, 1.5, etc.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of adding and subtracting decimal numbers.
• Explain that when adding and subtracting decimal numbers, we are actually adding and subtracting their decimal points.
• Show examples using manipulatives and model the process of adding and subtracting decimal points.
• Have students practice adding and subtracting decimal numbers with manipulatives.
