Topic: Identifying proper and common nouns

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and classify nouns as proper or common.

Materials

• Sentence strips with proper and common nouns
• Flashcards with proper and common nouns

Warm-up

• Begin by asking students if they know what a noun is.
• Ask students to give examples of nouns they know, such as cat, tree, school.
• Explain that all nouns name things, people, or ideas. Nouns can be proper or common.

Direct Instruction

• Define proper nouns as nouns that have their own unique name. These include specific names for people, places, and things. Examples include Paris, Mount Everest, and iPod.
• Define common nouns as nouns that do not have their own unique name. These include general names for people, places, and things. Examples include teacher, city, and chair.
• Explain that proper and common nouns can be identified by looking at their spelling. Proper nouns always have capital letters at the beginning of the name, while common nouns do not.
• Provide additional examples of proper and common nouns for students to identify and classify.

Guided Practice

• Provide a list of common and proper nouns for students to classify.
• Have students work in pairs to classify the nouns as common or proper.
• Ask for volunteers to share their answers and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Provide a list of nouns and have students identify whether each noun is common or proper.
