4th Grade Ei Words Lesson Plan Example (Language Arts)

Topic: EI Words

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and recognize ie and ei words.

Materials

• A list of words that includes both ie and ei words
• A whiteboard or a chalkboard
• Markers or chalk

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what the letters ie and ei stand for.
• Ask them to give an example of a word that has the letter ie or ei.
• Write the examples on the whiteboard or chalkboard.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that the letter ie makes the sound [i] when it is at the beginning of a word, and the letter ei makes the sound [ai] when it is at the end of a word.
• Use the word cards to demonstrate the sounds of ie and ei.
• Ask students to repeat the sounds after you.

Guided Practice

• Pass out the word cards and have students work in pairs to sort the words into piles based on whether the word starts with ie or ei.
• After sorting the words, have students work with a partner to identify the sounds of ie and ei in each word.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a word from the sorted cards and write a sentence using the word correctly.
• Encourage students to use their writing skills to clearly and accurately communicate their thoughts, and to use punctuation and capitalization appropriately.

Closure

• Review the ie and ei words and their meanings.
• Have students share any sentences they wrote during the independent practice.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice to assess their ability to know and write ie and ei words.
• Collect and review the sentences written during independent practice to assess understanding.
