Complete Sentences

Topic: Writing complete sentences

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to write a complete sentence by the end of the lesson.

Materials

  • Writing paper
  • Pencils
  • Sentence starters (e.g. "complete sentences have a subject and a verb")
  • Examples of complete sentences (e.g. "The cat slept on the couch." "The rain fell overnight.")

Warm-up

  • Write the following sentence starters on the board: "The cat", "the rain", "the sun", "the grass". Ask students to complete each sentence with a word or phrase that describes the subject. Encourage them to use nouns and verbs.
  • After a few examples, ask students to share their responses with a partner.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definition of a complete sentence: a sentence must have a subject and a verb.
  • Write several sentence starters on the board, such as "The dog barked" and "The rain fell." Ask students to identify the subject and verb in each sentence.
  • Explain that subjects and verbs must always go in the same order: subject-verb.
  • Demonstrate how to rearrange the words in a sentence to make sure that they are in the proper order: "The cat is sleeping" becomes "The sleeping cat" (subject-verb).

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to rewrite the sentence starters on the board in complete sentences.
  • Walk around the room and assist students as needed.
  • Review the correct sentence formats.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic and write a series of sentences about it.
  • Encourage students to use punctuation and capital letters in their sentences.
  • Have students illustrate their sentences and create a book to share with the class.

Closure

  • Review the parts of a complete sentence and the importance of using punctuation and capital letters.
  • Have students share their books with the class and discuss what they learned about the topic.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their sentences.
  • Collect and review students' books to assess their understanding of the concept.
