4th Grade Blood Circulation Lesson Plan Example

Topic:Blood Circulation

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the structure and function of the heart and how it maintains blood circulation throughout the body.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Images of the heart and blood vessels
  • Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors (optional)

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch their arms overhead and raise their hands if they can name one part of the body where blood comes from and where it goes.
  • Write their answers on the board: "blood comes from the heart and goes to the rest of the body."
  • Ask what they know about the heart and how it keeps blood flowing to the body.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the model of the heart to the students and explain that this model shows the chambers and valves of the heart.
  • Explain that blood enters the heart through the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava, which are large veins that carry blood back to the heart.
  • As you explain, point to the model of the heart and show the students where the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava enter the heart.
  • Show the students the model of the heart with the ventricles and atria removed to show the chambers and valves.
  • Explain that blood enters the heart through the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava, and then it is pumped out of the heart through the aorta, the largest artery in the body.
  • Explain that the blood is pumped out of the heart through the aorta by the beating heart's ventricles, which are the lower two chambers of the heart.
  • Show the students the model of the heart with the ventricles removed to show the chambers and their valves.
  • Point to each chamber and its valve, and explain their functions:
  • The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery, where it receives oxygen.
  • The left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body through the aorta.
  • Show the students pictures of the heart and its chambers, valves, and arteries.
  • Have the students label the pictures and identify the chambers, valves, and arteries.

Guided Practice: Blood Circulation

  • Have the students work in pairs to complete a worksheet on the blood circulation system.
  • The worksheet should include:

  • Have the students work in pairs to complete the matching activity, matching the blood vessels to their functions.
  • Have the students work in pairs to complete the connect the arteries puzzle, matching the arteries to their functions.
  • Have the students work in pairs to complete the cut and paste activity, cutting out the labeled diagrams of the heart and blood circulation system and pasting them into the correct order.
