Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Pictures of people from different countries
  • Map of the world
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever met someone who came from a different country. Ask them how they knew that person was from a different country.
  • Show the students a picture of a person from a different country and ask them to share something they know about that country.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of immigration by saying that today we are going to learn about people who come to live in a different country from their own.
  • Explain that there are many reasons why people choose to immigrate to a new country, including seeking a better life, escaping war or persecution, or finding work.
  • Show the students pictures of different countries and ask them to identify which country the person in the picture is from.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of pictures of immigrants from different countries.
  • Have the students work together to determine the reasons for each person's immigration and write them on a piece of paper.
  • Bring the students back together and have them share their findings with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose one of the reasons for immigration that they found to be the most interesting and research it further.
  • Have the students create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

  • Review the different reasons for immigration and the challenges that immigrants face.
  • Ask the students to share what they learned about immigration and how it affects their own lives.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the presentation and discussion to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect the students' written reflections and use them to assess their understanding of the meaning of immigration for themselves and their family.
