Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to write a simple narrative using the words first, next, then, and last.

Materials

• Pencils and paper for each student
• Examples of narratives (stories that use the words first, next, then, and last)

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a time when they did something in a specific order, such as eating their favorite dessert first, then their favorite dessert, and lastly their favorite dessert.
• Have students share their examples with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that stories often have a sequence of events, and these events can be organized into a timeline using the words first, next, then, and last.
• Show students some examples of stories that have been organized using these words.
• Have students brainstorm a list of words that can be used to describe the order of events in a story.
• Review the list of words with the class, emphasizing the use of first, next, then, and last.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to sequence a story using the words first, next, then, and last.
• Encourage students to use the words to describe the order of events in the story, and to create a timeline if possible.
• Have pairs swap their stories and have each pair check for correct sequencing.

Independent Practice

• Have students write a narrative using the words first, next, then, and last to sequence the events in their story.
• Encourage students to use descriptive language and detail to create a vivid picture in the reader's mind.

Closure

• Have students share their narratives with the class.
• Encourage feedback and discussion about the effectiveness of the sequencing words used in the narratives.
