Topic: /p/ and /b minimal pairs

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to distinguish between the phonemes /p/ and /b/.

Materials

  • Flashcards with minimal pairs such as "pin" and "bin"
  • Pencils and paper for writing

Warm-up

  • Ask learners to say the words "pin" and "bin" out loud.
  • Ask them to notice the differences between the two words.
  • Ask them to say the words again, slowly this time, and pay attention to the sounds they make.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the learners that the sounds they are making when they say "pin" and "bin" are called phonemes.
  • Tell them that a phoneme is the smallest sound unit in a language that can have a different meaning.
  • Show the learners the chart with the /p/ and /b/ minimal pairs and have them look at the words.
  • Ask them to listen carefully to the sound that follows the phoneme /p/ in each word and to compare it with the sound that follows the phoneme /b/ in each word.
  • Encourage them to listen closely and pay attention to the differences between the two sounds.

Guided Practice:

  • Show the learners the picture of a cat and have them say the word "cat" out loud.
  • Ask them to pay attention to the sound that follows the phoneme /p/ in the word "cat" and to compare it with the sound that follows the phoneme /b/ in the word "cat".
  • Encourage them to compare the two sounds and to notice any differences between them.

Independent Practice:

  • Have the learners create a simple cartoon using construction paper and pencils.
  • Ask them to include at least three different words containing the phonemes /p/ and /b/ in their cartoons.
  • Encourage them to think about the sounds that follow the phonemes /p/ and /b/ in each word and to try to make the sounds as similar as possible.
  • Have the learners share their cartoons with the class and have the class try to identify the words containing the phonemes /p/ and /b/.

Closure:

  • Review the word pairs that contained the phonemes /p/ and /b/ and ask the learners to remind the class how to pronounce each of the sounds.
  • Ask the learners to share one thing they learned about the phonemes /p/ and /b/ today.

Assessment:

  • Observe the learners during independent practice and provide feedback on their pronunciation of the word pairs.
  • Collect and review the posters created during independent practice to assess the learners' understanding of the phonemes /p/ and /b/.
