4th Grade Natural World Lesson Plan Example (English)

Topic: Natural World

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define the 10 vocabulary words within the natural world.
  • Students will be able to use the 10 vocabulary words properly in a sentence.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • 10 vocabulary words cards (one for each student)
  • Handout with the 10 vocabulary words and their definitions

Warm-up

  • Show the students a picture of a natural object (tree, river, mountain) and ask them to name the object.
  • Ask the students to think of as many natural objects as they can and write them down on a piece of paper.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of natural world and the 10 words to be learned (e.g. forest, river, mountain).
  • Show the students the pictures of the natural objects again and have them name the object.
  • Have the students repeat the words after you and write them down on the whiteboard or a sheet of paper.
  • Have the students practice saying the words out loud several times.
  • Explain the meaning of each word and give examples of how to use the word in a sentence.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group one of the natural objects to focus on.
  • Have the students look at the object and think of a sentence they could say using the word they have been given.
  • Have the students share their sentence with the class and have the class respond with the correct word.
  • Repeat with each of the natural objects.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work on a project where they choose one of the natural objects and research it further.
  • They should create a poster or presentation about their chosen object, including at least three facts they have learned about it.
  • Have the students present their posters or presentations to the class.

Closure

  • Review the 10 words within the natural world theme and their meanings.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the natural objects during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the PPP activity and take notes on their participation and understanding of the words.
  • Collect the students' independent practice posters and evaluate their understanding of the 10 words and their ability to use them in a sentence.
