Topic: Introduce personal narrative writing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to write a personal narrative about something that has happened to them.

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Copies of the personal narrative writing prompt for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a time when they experienced something new, exciting, or unexpected.
  • Write their ideas on the board.
  • Ask students if any of the experiences they mentioned were so interesting or exciting that they would like to tell someone about them.
  • Invite a few students to share their experiences with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that a personal narrative is a story that we write about an experience that is important to us.
  • Emphasize that the goal of a personal narrative is to not only describe the event, but also to explain how it made us feel and how it has changed us.
  • Provide examples of personal narratives and have students read them out loud.
  • Discuss the elements of a personal narrative (e.g. opening, body, closing).

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to brainstorm and begin drafting a personal narrative about an event or experience that is important to them.
  • Have students share their drafts with the class and provide feedback.

Independent Practice

  • Have students finish drafting their personal narratives and write a final draft to be submitted to the teacher.

Closure:

  • Have students share their personal narratives with the class.
  • Ask students to reflect on the process of writing a personal narrative and what they learned about themselves through the process.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the different parts of a personal narrative and their ability to incorporate them into their writing.
  • Collect and review the personal narratives written during independent practice to assess students' ability to write a complete and cohesive narrative.
