Topic: Consonant Digraph /sh/

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the sound represented by the consonant digraph /sh/.
  • Students will be able to spell words with the consonant digraph /sh/.

Materials

  • Word cards containing words with the consonant digraph /sh/ (e.g. nation, special, tension)
  • Writing paper and markers
  • Copy of the spelling rule: "Sh" is always followed by "e" (e.g. nation, special, tension)

Warm-up

  • Show the students the word cards one at a time and have them say the word aloud.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any words with the sound /sh/. Allow them to volunteer words or provide some yourself (e.g. shush, shark, shirt).
  • Have the students work in pairs or small groups to come up with as many words as they can with the sound /sh/.

Direct Instruction
