Free 4th Grade Consonant Digraph /Sh/ Lesson Plan

Topic: Consonant Digraph /sh/

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the sound represented by the consonant digraph /sh/.
• Students will be able to spell words with the consonant digraph /sh/.

Materials

• Word cards containing words with the consonant digraph /sh/ (e.g. nation, special, tension)
• Writing paper and markers
• Copy of the spelling rule: "Sh" is always followed by "e" (e.g. nation, special, tension)

Warm-up

• Show the students the word cards one at a time and have them say the word aloud.
• Ask the students if they can think of any words with the sound /sh/. Allow them to volunteer words or provide some yourself (e.g. shush, shark, shirt).
• Have the students work in pairs or small groups to come up with as many words as they can with the sound /sh/.

Direct Instruction

• Review the spellings of the words with the sound /sh/ that the students came up with.
• Explain that the sound /sh/ is made up of two letters, SH.
• Show the students the word cards with the sound /sh/ and have them say the word aloud.
• Have the students repeat the word after you, this time replacing the sound /sh/ with SH.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs and take turns reading the words with the sound /sh/ out loud to each other.
• Encourage the students to say the word correctly by reminding them to say the sound /sh/ as SH.

Independent Practice

• Have the students create a literacy center and provide them with a variety of materials such as cards with words containing the sound /sh/, flash cards, books, and alphabet letters.
• Ask the students to choose one of the materials and practice reading the words with the sound /sh/ out loud.
• Encourage the students to say the word correctly by reminding them to say the sound /sh/ as SH.

Closure

• Review the examples of words containing the sound /sh/ that were presented in the lesson.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the sound /sh/ today.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity to see if they are able to write words containing the sound /sh/ correctly.
• Collect the students' written work and assess their ability to spell words containing the sound /sh/
