Conjunction

Topic:Conjunction

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand how conjunction is used in different situations, and will be able to use conjunction correctly in their own writing.

Materials

  • Examples of sentences with conjunction (e.g. "I went to the store and bought groceries."; "The dog is sleeping and the cat is watching TV.")
  • Pencils and paper for writing

Warm-up

  • Show the examples of sentences with conjunction and ask the students to think about how the conjunction is used in each sentence.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any other examples of sentences with conjunction.
  • Write their ideas on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

  • Define conjunction to the students as a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses.
  • Show the examples of sentences with conjunction and ask the students to point out where the conjunction is used.
  • Discuss the different types of conjunction and give examples of each type. For example, we can divide conjunctions into coordinating and subordinating. Coordinating conjunctions connect equal elements, while subordinating conjunctions connect subordinate clauses to the main clause.
  • Discuss how the meaning of a sentence can be affected by the type of conjunction used. For example, the meaning of a sentence can change completely depending on whether we use a coordinating or subordinating conjunction.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of sentence fragments. Have the students use the conjunction cards to connect the sentence fragments into complete sentences.
  • Have the students share their completed sentences with the class and discuss any differences in meaning.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a list of sentence fragments and have them use the conjunction cards to connect the sentence fragments into complete sentences.
  • Have the students share their completed sentences with the class and discuss any differences in meaning.

Closure

  • Review the different types of conjunctions and give examples of each.
  • Ask the students to share any new understanding they have about the role of conjunctions in building sentences.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during the activity and look for evidence of understanding.
  • Have the students complete a written assessment where they must determine which conjunction is needed in a given sentence.
