Topic: Word shapes, WordArt, Inserting a table, Inserting & Deleting row or Column, Merging cells, Splitting cells, changing row height & column width, changing text alignment

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will learn about the different shapes and WordArt options in Microsoft Word.
  • Students will be able to create a table in Microsoft Word and manipulate the table to their needs.
  • Students will be able to insert, delete, merge, split, change row height, and change column width in Microsoft Word.

Materials

  • Computers with Microsoft Word installed
  • Handouts with instructions for the different activities

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch their hand and fingers for a few minutes.
  • Ask students to make a fist and then spread their fingers as wide as they can.
  • Then, have students make a triangle shape with their fingers and then squeeze them together as if they are gripping something. This will help students focus and pay attention throughout the lesson.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students how to create a new document in Word and set the font to Georgia.
  • Demonstrate how to create a shape in Word using the Shapes menu.
  • Show students how to resize, move, and modify the shape's properties (such as fill color, border color, and line style) using the Shape tools.
  • Demonstrate how to create a WordArt object in Word using the WordArt menu.
  • Show students how to resize, move, and modify the WordArt object's properties using the WordArt tools.
  • Demonstrate how to insert a table in Word using the Table menu.
  • Show students how to resize, move, and modify the table's properties (such as border color, cell spacing, and header row) using the Table tools.
  • Demonstrate how to insert and delete rows and columns in a table using the Table menu.
  • Demonstrate how to merge cells in a table using the Table menu.
  • Demonstrate how to split cells in a table using the Table menu.
  • Demonstrate how to change the row height and column width in a table using the Table menu.
  • Show students how to change the text alignment in a Word document using the Alignment menu.
  • Demonstrate how to use the various alignment options, such as left, right, center, and justified.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to complete the following tasks using the Word document they created in class:
  • Create a shape that represents their favorite animal.
  • Create a WordArt object that contains the name of their favorite animal and the word "favorite".
  • Create a table that contains the following information about their favorite animal: name, species, habitat, and notable features.
  • Merge the cells in the table to create one large cell for each piece of information.
  • Split the merged cell back into its original cells.
  • Change the text alignment in the table to right-justified.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project of their choice using Microsoft Word. This could be creating a brochure, report, letter, or any other type of document.

Closure:

  • As a class, review the various tasks that were completed during the lesson, such as creating a table, inserting WordArt, and changing the alignment of text.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to create a brochure using WordArt and tables. Evaluate students' final products to assess their ability to use proper alignment and spacing in their text.
