Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the inspiration behind Van Gogh's room painting.

Materials

• Van Gogh's room painting
• Fold paper in half
• Cut 2 lines from the folded edge to make the chair that will pop out
• Markers to trace and color the drawing with
• Colored pencils to color the drawing with

Warm-up

• Show students a picture of Van Gogh's room painting and ask them to describe what they see.
• Ask students if they know who Vincent van Gogh is and what he is famous for.
• Discuss with students that Van Gogh is famous for his colorful art paintings and he was also a great painter of portraits.

Direct Instruction

• Show students the folded paper and explain that they will be creating a pop out chair, inspired by Van Gogh's room painting.
• Instruct students to cut 2 lines from the folded edge of the paper to make the chair that will pop out.
• Discuss with students the colors used in Van Gogh's room painting and have them choose 2 different colors to use for their pop out chair.
• Have students trace the outline of the pop out chair with markers and then fill in the rest of the details with the chosen colors.
• Discuss with students how the colors they chose for their pop out chair show their creativity and individuality.

Guided Practice

• Have students work with a partner to complete a small drawing activity, using their colored pencils to create a pop out chair inspired by Van Gogh's room painting.
• Have students share their drawings with the class and discuss how their creativity and individualism is shown through their choice of colors and details.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a famous artist that inspires them and research their life and art.
• Students can create a pop out chair inspired by the artist's work.
• Students can present their pop out chairs to the class and discuss their choice of colors and details.

Closure

• Review the steps for creating a pop out chair using the template, tracing and coloring.
• Discuss the importance of imagination and creativity in art.

Assessment

• Observe and evaluate students' participation in small group and independent practice.
• Observe and evaluate students' ability to use the template and color appropriately in the pop out chair drawing.
• Observe and evaluate students' ability to create a pop out drawing that reflects Van Gogh's room painting.
