4th Grade Shading And Light Lesson Plan (Art)

Topic: Shading and light

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the techniques used to create the illusion of shading and light in a drawing.

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Eraser
  • Tissues or damp paper towels

Warm-up

  • Show students a variety of drawings that use different techniques to create the illusion of light and shadows, such as shading or hatching. Ask them to describe what they see in each drawing and how the artist created the illusion of light and shadows.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of shading, which is the process of adding darker tones to create the illusion of depth and volume. Show students how to use a pencil or pen to create darker tones by filling in the areas where we would expect to see darker shadows.
  • Introduce the concept of hatching, which is the process of adding lighter tones to create the illusion of light and highlights. Show students how to use a pencil or pen to create lighter tones by filling in the areas where we would expect to see lighter areas, such as the space between leaves on a tree or the light reflecting off of skin.
  • Demonstrate how to use both shading and hatching techniques to create a simple sketch of a person. Ask students to watch and follow along, practicing the techniques on their own paper as well.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a simple line drawing and have them practice shading and hatching on their own paper.
  • Have students work in pairs and provide each pair with a simple line drawing. Have them shade and hatch the drawing together, providing assistance as needed.
  • Demonstrate how to create a more complex sketch using both shading and hatching techniques. Have students watch and follow along, practicing the techniques on their own paper.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a simple line drawing and have them practice shading and hatching on their own paper.
  • Have students work in pairs and provide each pair with a simple line drawing. Have them shade and hatch the drawing together, providing assistance as needed.
  • Have students create a more complex sketch using both shading and hatching techniques. Encourage them to try new techniques and experiment with different methods.

Closure

  • Have students share their sketches with the class and discuss the different shading and hatching techniques they used.
  • Review the terms "shading" and "hatching" and discuss the different techniques that can be used to create these effects.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity to ensure that they are accurately shading and hatching their drawings.
  • Collect and review the drawings that students created during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of shading and hatching.
