4th Grade Picasso Portrait Relief Sculpture Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Picasso and Portrait Relief Sculpture

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will learn about the artist Picasso and his style of art.
• Students will play a game called Roll a picasso with dice and drawing.
• Students will cut cardboard and layer the pieces to build up a relief portrait.
• Students will use white glue to glue together the relief portrait.
• Students will paint white and use oil pastel and blending to color their relief portrait.

Materials:

• Cardboard
• Pencils
• Oil pastel crayons
• Blending stumps
• White glue
• Hot glue gun
• Paint
• Hershey's chocolate bars (optional)

Warm-up

• Show the students a picture of a Picasso painting and ask them to describe what they see in the painting.
• Have the students draw a self-portrait using only line and shape.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the students to the artist Picasso and his style of painting.
• Show the students some examples of Picasso's work and discuss the different techniques he uses, such as collage and cubism.
• Explain how to build up a relief portrait by cutting cardboard and layering the pieces.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give them the cardboard, scissors, and glue.
• Have the students follow the instructions on the handout to build a relief portrait.
• As the students work, circulate and offer assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• When the students have finished their portraits, have them use white glue to glue the pieces together.
• Have the students use oil pastel and blending to color in their portraits.

Closure

• Ask the students to share their portraits with the class.
• Ask the students to identify the materials and techniques used to create their portraits.

Assessment:

• Observation of the students during the independent practice, their ability to work independently and their completed portraits.
• Group discussion during the closure to evaluate students understanding of the materials and techniques used by Picasso.
