4th Grade Perspective Snowman Drawing Lesson Plan

Topic: Perspective Snowman Drawing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of perspective by drawing a snowman from various angles.
  • Students will be able to add shading to their drawings to give them a 3D appearance.

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Eraser
  • shading pencils or crayons (optional)

Warm-up

  • Have students draw a simple object, such as a chair, on a piece of paper, using basic shapes and lines.
  • Ask students to share their drawings and discuss what they notice about the way the object looks in different angles.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of perspective drawing and explain that it is a way of drawing objects in 3-dimensional space to create the illusion of depth and distance.
  • Show the students examples of perspective drawings and discuss the use of different perspective points (high, middle, and low) in creating the illusion of depth.
  • Explain that in this activity, the students will be drawing a snowman from different angles using the different perspective points.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group their snowman template.
  • Show the students how to use a ruler to help them draw straight lines and how to shade their drawing using a dark colored pencil.
  • Have the students start by drawing the side view of the snowman, using the ruler to help them draw straight lines and using the high perspective point to create the illusion of depth.
  • Next, have the students draw the bottom view of the snowman, again using the ruler to draw straight lines and the high perspective point to create the illusion of depth.
  • Continue with the close up view, the full view, and the bottom view again, encouraging the students to use the ruler to draw straight lines and the high perspective point to create the illusion of depth.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students use the templates to draw their own perspective snowmen, using the techniques they learned in the guided practice.
  • Encourage the students to use the ruler to help them draw straight lines and the high perspective point to create the illusion of depth.
  • Also have the students add some shading to their drawings to create more depth and dimension.

Closure

  • Have the students share their drawings with the class.
  • Ask the students to explain how they used the techniques they learned to create the perspective in their drawings.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice and give feedback.
  • Collect the students' drawings and review them to assess their ability to use perspective techniques to create a drawing of a snowman.
