Topic: Optical illusions

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to create a hand-drawn optical illusion using straight lines and some shading.

Materials

• Paper
• Pencils
• Eraser
• Hand tracing template (one per student)

Warm-up

• Do a quick overview of optical illusions and their characteristics (e.g. negative space, contrast, etc.).
• Have students draw a simple optical illusion on a piece of paper.

Direct Instruction

• Show students how to trace their hand on a piece of paper.
• Have students start drawing straight lines until the line curves inside the hand to create an optical illusion.
• Demonstrate how to add a little shading and an many lines as you can.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs and give one student a hand tracing and the other a pen.
• Have the student with the pen trace over the lines of the hand tracing to create a more defined drawing.
• Have the students switch roles and repeat.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a color and use a paintbrush to add shading to their hand drawing.
• Have students add as many lines as they can to create an optical illusion.

Closure

• Have students share their finished hand drawings with the class.
• Discuss the optical illusions created by the lines in the hand drawings.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided practice and independent practice stages to identify students who are having difficulty understanding the concept of creating an optical illusion with lines.
• Evaluate students' finished hand drawings to assess their understanding of the concept of creating an optical illusion with lines.
• Have students complete a written reflection on their experience creating an optical illusion with lines.
