4th Grade Bee Bubble Wrap Printmaking Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Bees

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will learn about the unique qualities and characteristics of bees.
• Students will be able to create a printmaking artwork of a bee using bubble wrap and markers.

Materials

• Bubble wrap
• Markers
• Hexagon template
• Drawing paper
• Scissors

Warm-up

• Ask students to watch a short video about bees and take notes about what they observe.
• After the video, have students share their observations and deductions about the bees in the video.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of printmaking and its various techniques, including mark making, stenciling, and bubble wrap printing.
• Show students how to trace a hexagon on a drawing sheet and use a marker to fill in the shape.
• Demonstrate how to layer bubble wrap on top of the hexagon, and use a blunt object (such as a pencil eraser) to press down on the bubble wrap to create the texture.
• Explain how to cut out bee drawings and arrange them on top of the hexagon print to add additional details.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with more drawing sheets and markers, and have them practice tracing and filling in hexagons.
• Assist students as needed to cut out the bee drawings and arrange them on top of their prints.
• Encourage students to use their imaginations to add additional details to their prints, such as using a colored pencil to add color to the bee bodies or using a black pen to draw on the eyes.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with a variety of materials such as foam, plastic, and metal bubble wrap; scrap paper; and markers, and have them work in pairs to experiment with different techniques for printing the bubble wrap texture.
• Encourage students to share their ideas with the class and discuss the similarities and differences in the techniques they tried.

Closure

• Have the students choose one of the techniques they tried and create a print using bubble wrap and markers.
• Have the students share their prints with the class and discuss what they learned about printmaking and the different techniques they tried.

Assessment

• Observe the students as they create their prints and provide feedback on their technique and their use of the bubble wrap.
• Have the students complete a reflection on the printmaking process and what they learned about the different techniques.
