Topic:Writing a Paragraph

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to write a paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

Materials

• Writing paper
• Pencils
• Whiteout

Warm-Up

• Show students a picture or object and ask them to describe it in one sentence.
• Have them share their descriptions with a partner.
• Ask if their descriptions are clear and concise, and if they include a topic sentence and supporting details.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a paragraph as a collection of related sentences that explore a single topic.
• Explain that a topic sentence is the main idea of the paragraph, and it should be clear and concise.
• Show students how to brainstorm ideas for supporting details, and help them organize their ideas into a logical sequence.
• Model how to write a first draft, including how to start with a topic sentence and then add in supporting details.

Guided Practice

• Ask students to work in small groups to write a paragraph about a summer vacation activity of their choice.
• Provide support and guidance as needed to help students organize their thoughts and write their paragraphs.
• Have students share their paragraphs with the class and provide feedback.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a topic for a paragraph and write it independently.

Closure
