Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the significance of historical events and figures in their region through creative storytelling

Materials

• History books about historical events and figures in the region
• Period costumes and props for storytelling

Warm-up

• Ask students to collect pictures of historical events and figures in their region.
• Display the pictures and ask students to explain what they know about each event or figure.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of history and its importance in understanding the past and shaping the present.
• Explain that history is divided into time periods, and that each time period has its own unique events and characteristics.
• Using the pictures as examples, introduce the different time periods and their corresponding names (e.g. Ancient History, Colonial Period, Modern Era).
• Ask students to brainstorm a list of events and figures from their region that belong to each time period.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a specific time period.
• Have each group brainstorm a list of events and figures from their assigned time period.
• Have each group present their list to the class and discuss any differences or additions.
• As a class, create a chart on chart paper with the time period on the x-axis and the events and figures on the y-axis.
• Have students add their assigned time period and any additional events and figures to the chart.

Independent Practice

• Have students select one event or figure from the chart to research in more detail.
• Have students write a short paragraph about their selected event or figure, including any details they found particularly interesting.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson as a class.
• Ask students to share something they found interesting or surprising about the events and figures they researched.

Assessment:

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the event or figure they chose to research.
• Have students present their projects to classmates or a panel of teachers for feedback.
