3rd Grade Rounding To Nearest Tens Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Rounding to nearest tens

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to round numbers to the nearest tens place.

Materials

  • Worksheets with numbers ranging from 30 to 90
  • Rulers or meters to measure with

Warm-up

  • Ask students to stand up and stretch their bodies. Then, have them stand in a straight line and have them raise their hands if their number is a multiple of 10. For example, if the number is 30, students should raise their hands, but if the number is 40, they shouldn't raise their hands. Do this with a few numbers and have students call out their answers.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of rounding by explaining that it is the process of finding the closest number that is less than or equal to a given number.
  • Show students some numbers on the board and ask them to guess what the rounded number is. Then, have them check their answers by rounding the numbers themselves.
  • Explain that when rounding to the nearest tens, we always round up if the last digit is 5 or greater, and we round down if the last digit is 4 or less.
  • Use the number cards to practice rounding to the nearest tens. Have students predict what the rounded number will be, then have them round the number themselves.

Guided Practice

  • Using the number cards, have students work in pairs to round the numbers to the nearest tens.
  • Walk around the room and check student work to ensure accuracy.
  • Assign a few numbers for students to round on their own, and have them use a calculator if needed.
  • Allow time for students to check their work and discuss any questions they have.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a number between 1 and 100 to round to the nearest tens.
  • Have them use manipulatives or a calculator to round the number, and record the answer on a sheet of paper.
  • Have students complete several rounds of this activity, and have them present their results to the class.

Closure

  • Review the concept of rounding with the students, and ask them to provide examples of rounding numbers.
  • Encourage students to continue practicing rounding with numbers in the real world.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their ability to round numbers.
  • Administer a quiz to assess students' understanding of rounding to closest tens.##Evaluation
  • Based on their participation in the class discussions and their ability to round numbers during independent practice, assess students' understanding of rounding to nearest tens.
  • Use the quiz results to inform any necessary re-teaching or further instruction.
