Topic: Rounding to nearest tens

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to round numbers to the nearest tens place.

Materials

• Worksheets with numbers ranging from 30 to 90
• Rulers or meters to measure with

Warm-up

• Ask students to stand up and stretch their bodies. Then, have them stand in a straight line and have them raise their hands if their number is a multiple of 10. For example, if the number is 30, students should raise their hands, but if the number is 40, they shouldn't raise their hands. Do this with a few numbers and have students call out their answers.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of rounding by explaining that it is the process of finding the closest number that is less than or equal to a given number.
• Show students some numbers on the board and ask them to guess what the rounded number is. Then, have them check their answers by rounding the numbers themselves.
• Explain that when rounding to the nearest tens, we always round up if the last digit is 5 or greater, and we round down if the last digit is 4 or less.
• Use the number cards to practice rounding to the nearest tens. Have students predict what the rounded number will be, then have them round the number themselves.

Guided Practice
