Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• Non fiction text
• Question sheet (one per student)

Warm-up

• Ask students to name some non fiction books they have read.
• Ask students to share one interesting fact they learned from a non fiction book they have read.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the non fiction text to the students.
• Ask students to listen for the main topic of the text.
• Explain that non fiction texts often have headings and subheadings that help us understand the main ideas of the text.
• Ask students to read the first few paragraphs of the text and identify the headings and subheadings.
• Have students underline or highlight the headings and subheadings as they read the text.
• Explain that non fiction texts often contain photographs, charts, and graphs to help explain the main ideas.
• Ask students to pay attention to the photographs, charts, and graphs as they read the text, and how they help explain the main ideas.
• Ask students to make note of any interesting facts they find in the text.

Guided Practice

• Pass out the non fiction texts to the students and have them begin reading.
• Walk around the room and check in with students as they read, asking questions such as:
• What is the main topic of the text?
• What headings and subheadings have you found?
• What are some interesting facts you have found?
• Can you explain how the headings, subheadings, and photographs help explain the main ideas of the text?
• As students are reading, provide support and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a reading comprehension worksheet on the non fiction text.
• Encourage students to discuss and explain their answers with their partners.

Closure

• Have students share their favorite parts of the non fiction text and why.
