Topic: How can students identify fiction from non fiction text

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify fiction from non fiction text.

Materials

• Fiction texts (short stories or poems)
• Non fiction texts (articles or essays)
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of fiction and non fiction.
• Ask them to give examples of these types of texts.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the terms fiction and non fiction.
• Explain that fiction is a type of text that involves made up or imaginary events and characters.
• Non fiction is a type of text that includes real events and real people. It also includes information that is true and can be verified.
• Ask students to give examples of fiction and non fiction texts they have read or heard about.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify the type of text a passage is (fiction or non fiction) based on the information in the passage.
• Have students share their answers with the class and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• For the independent practice activity, have students choose a book they have not read before and write a short passage to -show how they can identify the type of text (fiction or non fiction) based on the information in the passage.
• Students can use this passage to create a labeling graphic to include on a reading bulletin board or a poster.

Closure

• Review the skills that students have learned for identifying fiction and non fiction text.
• Ask students to share one way they can use these skills in their daily lives.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice portion of the activity to see if they are able to accurately identify the fiction and non fiction text.
