Topic: Fires and my personal safety

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the danger of fire and how to protect themselves from it.

Materials

• Cardboard boxes
• Old newspapers
• Matches or candles
• Gloves
• Hat
• Long pants
• Shoes
• Apron

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen a fire before.
• Ask them to describe what it looked like and what it did.
• Ask them if they know how fires start and how to keep themselves safe from them.

Direct Instruction

• Show pictures or videos of different types of fires (e.g. kitchen fires, electrical fires, fires caused by smoking).
• Discuss the causes and dangers of each type of fire.
• Explain the importance of personal safety and how to stay safe from fire.
• Emphasize the importance of calling 911 and getting out of the building as quickly as possible if there is a fire.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Give each group a set of pictures or objects to represent different types of fires.
• Have the students work together to create a poster illustrating how to stay safe from each type of fire.
• Have one or two students from each group present their posters to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one type of fire to research.
• Ask them to write a short report about the fire, including information about how it starts, how it can be detected, and how it can be prevented.

Closure

• Review the key points of the lesson.
• Ask the students to share what they have learned about fires and personal safety.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to ensure that they are accurately -identifying the different sources of -fire and demonstrating proper fire safety techniques. Evaluate their posters to assess their understanding of the topic.
