Topic: Where are you from?

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain where they are from and identify themselves as being from a particular country or region.

Materials

  • World map or map of the world
  • Name tags with students' names
  • Markers or pens

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what a country is.
  • Ask them to name some countries they know.
  • Write the names of the countries on the board or on a piece of paper.

Direct Instruction

  • Ask students if they know that everyone in the world is from a different country.
  • Ask them if they know what a native is.
  • Explain that a native is someone who was born in a certain country and who belongs to that country.
  • Ask students to listen carefully as you read a poem about countries and natives.
  • Read the poem, pausing after each line to allow time for the students to repeat it after you.
  • Ask students to think about what they have learned about countries and natives.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and have each group brainstorm a list of countries and describe the inhabitants of each country.
  • As a group, discuss the differences and similarities in the lists and come to a consensus on the countries and peoples they will share with the class.
  • Have each group present their list to the class and explain their choices.

  • Have students work in pairs or groups to create a " countries of the world" project.
  • Students can research and create a poster, illustration, or presentation to show the class where they are from, and the people who live there.

  • Have each group or pair present their project to the class.
  • Ask students to share what they learned about different countries and people.
  • End the lesson with a brief discussion about the importance of learning about different cultures and people.

  • Observe students during the sorting activity and discussion to assess their understanding of the concept of nationality and cultural identities.
