Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and classify verbs as action verbs, linking verbs, or helping verbs.

Materials

• Chart paper and markers
• List of common action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs (provided below)

Warm-Up

• Ask students if they know what verbs are.
• Ask for examples of verbs.
• Write the following sentence on the board: "The cat chased the mouse around the house."
• Ask students what the verb is in this sentence (chased).
• Write the following sentence on the board: "She smiles at me when I enter the room."
• Ask students what the verb is in this sentence (smiles).
• Ask students if they can think of any other verbs they know. Write their suggestions on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that there are different types of verbs.
• Ask students if they know what a verb is.
• If necessary, provide a brief overview of what a verb is (a word that shows an action or a state of being).
• Introduce the different types of verbs:
• Action verb: a verb that shows an action
• Modal verb: a verb that shows possibility, ability, or necessity
• Negative verb: a verb that shows the negative or opposite of an action
• Transitive verb: a verb that requires a direct object
• Intransitive verb: a verb that does not require a direct object
• Have students work with a partner to create a list of action verbs, modal verbs, negative verbs, and transitive verbs on the board.

Guided Practice
