3rd Grade To Make A Prediction Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Predicting using key features on a text

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use key features on a text to make predictions about what will happen in the story.

Materials

  • Copies of a children's story with illustrations (e.g. "The Three Little Pigs")
  • Highlighters or colored pencils

Warm-up

  • Show the students a few illustrations from the story and ask them to make predictions about what will happen in the story based on what they see in the illustrations.
  • Encourage the students to use key features on the illustrations (e.g. the characters, the setting, the actions taking place) to make their predictions.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of making predictions about a text, explaining that it is a way to engage with a story and make it more interesting by trying to guess what will happen next.
  • Use the text that the students will be reading as an example, showing them how to look for key features on the text (e.g. title, illustrations, headings, summary sentences) and using them to make predictions about what will happen in the story.

Guided Practice

  • Give each student a copy of the text and have them work in pairs to make predictions about what will happen in the story, using the key features on the text as a guide.
  • Have the students share their predictions with the class and discuss any differences or similarities in their predictions.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a copy of a different text with key features that have been removed.
  • Have the students make predictions about what will happen in the story using the key features they can see, then complete the story and see if their predictions were correct.
  • Encourage the students to use the key features they can see to help them make their predictions.

Closure

  • Have the students share their predictions with the class and explain why they made those predictions.
  • Review the key features that were used in the stories and have the students share something they learned about them.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they complete the graphic organizer and look for understanding of the key features and their use in the stories.
  • Collect and review the graphic organizers to assess the students' understanding of the key features and their ability to apply them in making a prediction.
