Topic: Simple tenses

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Understand the different simple tenses (present, past, and future) and how to use them in your writing.

Materials

  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper
  • Interactive whiteboard or chalkboard

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what tenses are and if they can give an example of a tense.
  • Write the following tenses on the board: present, past, future.
  • Ask students to point to the tense that matches each example: ___ sees, ___ saw, ___ will see.
  • Review the concept of verb tenses and the different names for each tense (present progressive, past perfect, future perfect).

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that there are six simple tenses in English (present, past, future, present perfect, past perfect, future perfect).
  • Write the tenses on the board and have students repeat after you.
  • Review the usage and pronunciation of each tense, using the handouts as a reference.
  • Explain the difference between present and past tense, and between future and future perfect tense.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to complete a matching exercise using the tenses on the board. You can use flashcards or simply write the tenses on the board and have students identify and match them.
  • As a class, review the correct matches and discuss any issues or difficulties students encountered.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students choose a story they've previously read or heard and write a short paragraph using one of the tenses they've learned in class. Encourage them to use the tense appropriately and accurately in their writing.

Closure

  • Review the different tenses and have students give examples of each.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about tenses during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of simple tenses.
  • Collect and review the written work to assess students' ability to use simple tenses correctly in a paragraph.
