Topic: Past Simple

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to use the past simple to talk about events that happened in the past.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Examples of past simple sentences (e.g. "I ate lunch yesterday.")

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can think of any events that happened in the past. Write their ideas on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they can use the past simple to talk about these events.
• Ask for volunteers to give examples of past simple sentences, such as "I played outside yesterday."

Direct Instruction

• Review the past simple tense by writing the -ed ending on the whiteboard and saying "past simple means that an action happened in the past and is not happening now."
• Give examples of past simple verbs, such as "ran," "ate," and "played."
• Have students repeat the past simple verbs after you.
• Explain that we use the past simple to talk about specific events that happened in the past. We can also use it to talk about a series of events that happened in the past, but only if they are in the correct order.
• Write the following sentence on the whiteboard: "Last week, I played outside, took a nap, and had dinner."
• Ask students to identify the past simple verb in each sentence and say it out loud.
• Ask students to give examples of past simple sentences about past events.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Give each group a set of past simple flashcards with verbs on them. -Have each group work together to match the verbs to the correct past simple sentence.
• As each group finishes, have them share their sentences with the class and discuss any errors or questions.
• Any students who struggle with the past simple can be assisted individually by the teacher.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a sheet of past simple flashcards with verbs on them.
• Have students work alone to match the verbs to the correct past simple sentence.
• As students finish, have them put their flashcards in a stack in front of them and take a small break before the next activity.

Closure

• Review the past simple with the students.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about the past simple today.
• End the lesson by reminding students that they can use the past simple to talk about past events.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the past simple.
• Collect and review their sentences written using the past simple for accuracy and grammar.
