Topic: Talking about past events

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to talk about past events using the past simple tense.

Materials

• Word cards for the verbs "to walk", "to ride", "to fly", "to swim", and "to run"
• A timer or a stopwatch
• A whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a past event that they enjoyed doing.
• Have them share their ideas with a partner.
• Write their responses on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they can recall how to talk about past events in English.
• Write their responses on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that we use the past simple to talk about past events.
• Give examples of past events using the past simple, such as "I went to the park yesterday."
• Ask students to repeat the examples after you.
• Write the examples on the whiteboard.
• Ask students to brainstorm more examples of past events using the past simple.
• Write their responses on the whiteboard.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to create a list of past events using the past simple.
• Encourage them to use the examples on the whiteboard as a starting point.
• Have each group share their list with the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one past event from their list to talk about with the class.
• Encourage them to use gestures and expressions to help -their peers understand what they are saying.

Closure:

• Ask students to share one interesting fact about their chosen past event.
• Ask them to explain why it is interesting and how it relates to the historical event.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and make notes on their understanding of the past event and their ability to find an interesting fact and explain its significance.
• Have students turn in their written explanations as a form of assessment.
