Topic: Conversation communicatively

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to engage in an interactive communicative conversation with a native speaker on a given topic.

Materials

• A native speaker
• A given topic for the conversation (e.g. school, family, weather, etc.)
• A list of basic conversational questions for the given topic (e.g. "What school do you go to?", "How many brothers and sisters do you have?", "What's the weather like today?", etc.)

Warm-up

• Begin the lesson by asking the students if they have ever talked to a native speaker before.
• Ask the students to share their experiences and how they felt during the conversations.
• Explain to the students that in this lesson, they will learn how to have an interactive communicative conversation with a native speaker.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of the conversation, for example, traveling.
• Explain to the students that in order to have a successful conversation, they need to follow certain rules, such as listening carefully, asking questions, and giving appropriate answers.
• Model the conversation for the students using a native speaker.
• Have the students take notes on the conversation and try to mimic the interaction afterwards.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a topic to discuss.
• Have the students take turns asking questions and giving answers to their partner.
• Encourage the students to listen carefully and use the appropriate expressions.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a worksheet with a list of topics and have them choose one to discuss with a partner.
• Have the students take turns asking questions and giving answers to their partner.
• Encourage the students to use the appropriate expressions and to listen carefully.

Closure

• Have the students share their conversations with the class and discuss the different topics that were covered.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to hold a conversation with the instructor and the strategy they used to communicate their thoughts.
