Animal Classification Lesson Plan for 3rd Grade Students

Topic: Animal Classification

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and classify animals as vertebrates or invertebrates.

Materials

  • Pictures of different types of animals (vertebrates, invertebrates, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever seen or heard of any animals before.
  • Ask them to name some animals they know.
  • As they name the animals, write them on the chart paper.
  • After a few names have been called out, ask the students if any of the animals they named are vertebrates or invertebrates.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that vertebrates are animals with a backbone (also called a spinal column) made up of bones.
  • Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone.
  • Point to the pictures of vertebrates and invertebrates on the chart paper and have the students identify which are vertebrates and which are invertebrates.
  • Ask the students if they know any other features that animals might have.
  • Possible answers could be fur or hair, scales, feathers, wings, etc.
  • Have the students name these features as you write them on the chart paper.

Guided Practice

  • Show the students a few more pictures of different types of vertebrates and invertebrates and have them classify the animals as either vertebrates or invertebrates.
  • As a class, discuss the differences and similarities between the animals.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any reasons why some animals are classified as vertebrates and others are classified as invertebrates.
  • Possible answers could be that vertebrates have a more complex nervous system than invertebrates, or that vertebrates have a central nervous system with a brain and spinal cord, while invertebrates have a less complex nervous system without a brain or spinal cord.

Independent Practice

  • For independent practice, have the students work in small groups to create a classroom poster that shows different types of vertebrates and invertebrates and explains the characteristics that define each category.
  • Each group should include both vertebrates and invertebrates, and should use real or imaginary examples.
  • The students can research and reference any information they need online or in a library to complete their poster.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson with the students, including the characteristics that define each category of vertebrates and invertebrates.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about vertebrates and invertebrates today.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review the students' classification diagrams to assess their ability to correctly classify animals.
