3rd Grade Computer User Interface Lesson Plan Example (Computer)

Topic: Identify the uses of user interface and its elements

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different uses of user interface and its elements in different types of computer applications.

Materials

  • Computer with different types of computer applications installed (e.g. web browser, word processor, spreadsheet software, gaming software, etc.)
  • Handouts with examples of user interface and its elements in different types of computer applications

Warm-up

  • Show the students a computer application and ask them to describe what they see on the screen. Ask them to point out the different elements on the screen that they see and explain their function.
  • Repeat the activity with different computer applications and have the students describe and point out the different elements on the screen.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the term "user interface" and explain that it refers to the way a person interacts with a computer application or device.
  • Discuss the different elements of user interface, such as buttons, icons, and menus, and explain their functions.
  • Provide examples of how user interface elements are used to help users perform tasks and achieve goals with a computer application.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a video demonstration of a computer application with a well-designed user interface.
  • Have students watch the video and identify the different user interface elements present in the video.
  • Have students discuss how the user interface elements are used to help users perform tasks and achieve goals with the application.
  • Lead a group discussion about how the user interface in the video compares to other user interfaces students have seen or used.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a worksheet that includes a variety of computer applications with different user interfaces.
  • Have students review the user interfaces for the applications on the worksheet and identify the different user interface elements present in each one.
  • Have students create a collage or poster that shows the user interface elements for each application and how they are used to help users perform tasks and achieve goals.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson with the students: user interfaces are the ways that users interact with computer applications, and they often include visual elements such as icons and menus.
  • Ask students to share their collage or poster with the class and explain the user interface elements they included and how they are used.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity to see if they are able to identify and explain the user interface elements in a web or mobile application.
  • Collect and review the collages or posters created during the independent practice to assess students' understanding of user interface elements and their uses.
