Topic: Printmaking

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the basic tools and materials used in printmaking.
  • Students will be able to design and create a simple image using foam, embossing tools, black ink, brayers, bright colored card stock, to depict kindness.

Warm-Up

  • Have students stretch their bodies and do some breathing exercises to get their bodies and minds ready for creativity and art making.
  • Show students examples of prints and encourage them to look at the different textures, patterns, and shapes they see. Ask them what they notice about the prints.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of printmaking and explain that artists use tools and materials to create unique prints.
  • Discuss the materials that will be used in the activity (foam, embossing tools, black ink, brayers, bright colored card stock).
  • Demonstrate how to carve a simple image into the foam and then print it onto the card stock.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs and provide them with the materials and step-by-step instructions for how to carve the image into the foam and print it onto the card stock.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and offer assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • For their independent practice, have students choose a quote or saying related to kindness and create their own foam carving and printmaking project. They can choose to create a single image or a series of images. Encourage them to be creative and use their imaginations.

Closure

  • Have the students share their projects with the group and discuss the meaning behind their designs. Ask them to reflect on their experience making printmaking and foam carving projects and discuss what they learned about the process.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding of the process.
  • Collect the students' finished projects and review them to assess their ability to successfully execute the technique and their understanding of the theme.
