Free Pop Art Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: Pop art

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the concept of pop art and its characteristics.
  • Students will be able to identify and create their own pop art inspired artworks.

Materials

  • Various art materials (e.g. construction paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue)
  • Examples of pop art artworks (can be real or pictures)

Warm-up

  • Show the students some examples of pop art artworks and ask them to describe what they see in them.
  • Encourage the students to use their senses to describe the artworks (e.g. look at them, touch them, smell them, etc.).
  • Ask the students if they know what pop art is and if they have heard about any artist who creates pop art artworks.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that pop art is a type of art that uses popular and everyday objects and images to make art.
  • Show the students more examples of pop art artworks and ask them to describe what they see in them.
  • Discuss with the students the techniques used by the pop art artists to create their art, such as collage, stenciling, and screen printing.
  • Introduce the students to some of the most famous pop art artists, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Keith Haring.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to create their own pop art-inspired artworks using collage, stenciling, and/or screen printing.
  • Provide the students with materials such as magazines, paper, scissors, paint, and/or ink for their artwork.
  • Assist the students as needed during the creation process.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students present their pop art-inspired artworks to the class.
  • Encourage the students to discuss their artwork and explain how they used the materials and techniques to create their piece.

Closure

  • Review the main ideas of the lesson and discuss the characteristics of pop art ( bright colors, geometric shapes, simple images, popular culture references).
  • Ask the students to share what they like about pop art and why.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice to see if they are able to create their own pop art artworks using bright colors and geometric shapes and using popular culture references in their artworks.
  • Collect and review their pop art artworks to assess their understanding of the main ideas of the lesson.
