Topic: Understanding nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a German story

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a German story.
• Students will be able to explain the function of each word in the story.

Materials

• Picture books or short stories in German
• Pencils and paper for students to take notes on the story

Warm-up

• Write the following words on the board: Noun, Verb, Adjective.
• Have students take turns reading each word and giving an example of a word that fits that category.
• Encourage students to use adjectives to describe a person, place, or thing.
• Ask students if they can think of any words in the story they think might be nouns, verbs, or adjectives.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the word categories: nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
• Read the story "Die große Wörterfabrik" and stop after each word to ask students what category the word might belong to.
• If the word is a noun, ask students to give an example of a person, place, or thing that the word might refer to.
• If the word is a verb, ask students to give an example of what the word might mean.
• If the word is an adjective, ask students to give an example of how the word might be used to describe a person, place, or thing.
• As a class, discuss the examples and decide if the word is a noun, verb, or adjective.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs and give them the same story passage from "Die große Wörterfabrik" .
• Have students take turns reading the passage and asking their partner questions about the word category and example for each word.
• As a class, discuss the examples and what category each word belongs to.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in small groups and choose a story passage from "Die große Wörterfabrik" to work with.
• Have each group take turns reading the passage and identifying the nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
• Have each group share their findings with the class.

Closure:

• Review the different types of words identified in "Die große Wörterfabrik" and have students give examples of each.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to ensure they are accurately identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives in their chosen story.
• Have students complete a worksheet where they practice identifying and labeling nouns, verbs, and adjectives in given sentences or paragraphs.
