Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Picture books or short stories in German
  • Pencils and paper for students to take notes on the story

Warm-up

  • Write the following words on the board: Noun, Verb, Adjective.
  • Have students take turns reading each word and giving an example of a word that fits that category.
  • Encourage students to use adjectives to describe a person, place, or thing.
  • Ask students if they can think of any words in the story they think might be nouns, verbs, or adjectives.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the word categories: nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • Read the story "Die große Wörterfabrik" and stop after each word to ask students what category the word might belong to.
  • If the word is a noun, ask students to give an example of a person, place, or thing that the word might refer to.
  • If the word is a verb, ask students to give an example of what the word might mean.
  • If the word is an adjective, ask students to give an example of how the word might be used to describe a person, place, or thing.
