Topic: Indigenous Tribe PowWows

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain why indigenous tribes celebrate with powwows.

Materials

• Pictures of indigenous tribes holding a powwow
• Article about the history and purpose of a powwow
• Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of a powwow before. Ask them to share what they know about it.
• Show the students a picture of an indigenous tribe holding a powwow. Ask them what they notice about the picture.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that a powwow is a celebration that indigenous tribes hold to celebrate their culture and traditions.
• Share more pictures of different indigenous tribes holding powwows and ask students to describe what they see in the pictures.
• Discuss the different types of clothing, dance moves, and instruments that are featured at powwows.
• Explain that powwows can last for a few hours or several days and can include dancing, singing, and giving away prizes.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to research and write a short paragraph about a specific indigenous tribe and their tradition of holding powwows.
• Encourage students to use any of the information from the pictures and their knowledge of the tribe to inform their writing.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a different indigenous tribe to research and write a short paragraph about their tradition of holding powwows.
• Encourage students to use any of the information from the pictures and their knowledge of the tribe to inform their writing.

Closure:

• Have students share their paragraphs about the different powwows with the class.
• Ask students to reflect on what they learned about indigenous tribes and why they hold powwows.

Assessment:

• Collect and grade the paragraphs written by students about the different powwows.-Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their drawings and writing.
