2nd Grade Positivity Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Positivity

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand what it means to be positive and how being positive can improve their lives and the lives of others.

Materials

  • Posters with images or quotes about being positive
  • Construction paper and markers for each student
  • Glue sticks
  • Large piece of blank paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students to close their eyes and think about a time when they were really happy. Have them scribble their thoughts on the large piece of blank paper.
  • After a few minutes, have the students share their thoughts with a partner. Ask them to describe the situation and how they felt.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of positivity and explain that it means having a positive attitude and seeing the positive side of things.
  • Show the large blank paper and explain that this is a visual representation of positivity. Ask students to brainstorm ideas for how to be more positive and write them on the paper.
  • As a class, discuss the ideas and how they can be applied in everyday life.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to come up with three ways they can be more positive in their own lives. Have them share their ideas with a small group and discuss how they can put them into practice.

Independent Practice

  • Have students draw a picture of themselves being positive (e.g. smiling, helping someone). They can then write a sentence below their picture explaining how they are being positive in the scene depicted.

Closure

  • Review the importance of being positive and the effects it can have on ourselves and others. Ask students to share one thing they learned about being positive today.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their posters. Collect and review the class list of positive words, phrases, and actions. Evaluate students' participation in the class discussion and their participation in the independent practice.
